The first feature film by painter/director Huszariik, Sinbad stands as one of the great -- and unsung -- uses of color in the cinema.
Based on a novel by Gyula Krudy, the film is an evocation of memories of past romantic attachments by an aging Don Juan, set around the turn of the century. The film is romantic and sensual, almost purely on the basis of its elaborate imagery, as well as for its dramatic cutting which gives visual poetics precedence over narrative utility.
Opulent in the lush style of Max Ophüls, reminiscent of the post-neorealist Visconti films, yet overseen with discipline and control, Sinbad was photographed by the eminent cinematographer Sandor Sara.
