| Synopsis |
With a flair for visually appealing and well-paced films, veteran British director Michael Winner has established himself as the master of a variety of genres -- the western (Chato's Land), thriller (Scorpio, Scream For Help), supernatural fantasy (The Nightcomers), droll satire (The Jokers), and the hugely successful Death Wish vigilante series.
In The Girl Getters, made early in his career, Winner worked with a remarkable group of talented collaborators on a touching romantic drama set at an English seaside resort. Oliver Reed (Women in Love, The Three Musketeers) is the handsome young hero, Tinker, the local Don Juan, who works as a beach photographer. A slick and sexy operator who helps his pals stake out the prettiest visitors to town during the season, he has phenomenal success in his conquests, but the tables are turned when he meets and falls in love with a glamorous fashion model.
The most recent recruit in Tinker's gang of girl hunters is played by the young David Hemmings (Blow Up). The brilliant cinematography which indelibly captures the resort town's steamy picturesqueness is the work of one of the world's leading cameramen, Nicolas Roeg (Fahrenheit 451), who later became a major director in his own right (Walkabout, Don't Look Now).
The Girl Getters has been rarely shown in the U.S. since its brief original release. This engrossing film is a striking rediscovery in the British Beat Cinema genre.
