KINO INTERNATIONAL TO OPEN SARAH WATT’S LOOK BOTH WAYS IN APRIL 2006
Kino International is proud to announce the theatrical release of Sarah Watt’s LOOK BOTH WAYS, named Best Film at the recent Australian Academy Awards and winner of the Discovery Award at the 2005 Toronto Film Festival – a prize given by a poll of more than 750 international critics.
Set to open in New York City in April 2006, followed by a national release in the spring, LOOK BOTH WAYS is the first feature film written and directed by Sarah Watt, an internationally acclaimed creator of animated films.
LOOK BOTH WAYS follows the story of Meryl (Justine Clarke), a woman who sees disaster everywhere. She is constantly daydreaming of train wrecks, muggings, and shark attacks—her life is governed by an absurd and comical fear of catastrophe.
One day, Meryl is a witness to a real accident. This event links her to the lives of many other people who are affected by it. One is Nick (William McInnes), a photographer caught up in his own solitary fears. As Meryl and Nick clumsily attempt to connect, they are continually blocked by their own pent-up anxieties.
As the two of them become wary lovers over a hot weekend, their story is circled by those of other characters, likewise trying to break free from isolation and confusion.
Unafraid to explore the lives of melancholic subjects, LOOK BOTH WAYS is nevertheless more Woody Allen than Ingmar Bergman. The film’s characters certainly have their share of foibles, neuroses and contradictions, but they are looked at with a gaze that is witty, insightful and compassionate. The title can be interpreted as a warning, but it is really an appeal to stop and "look both ways" at life. |
