Winner of the 2007 Berlin Film Festival's Best Director award, and a nominee for the Best Foreign Film Academy Award,BEAUFORT
chronicles the final days of an Israeli army unit's tense, painful
withdrawal in 2000 from a strategic bunkers inside a 12th century Crusader
fortress near the Lebanese border, marking the end of nearly two decades of
controversial occupation. The Film tells the story of Liraz Liberti, the 22 year old commander of Beaufort and his troops during the last few weeks prior to their withdrawal. BEAUFORT does not center on war but on retreat. The base is still under heavy enemy bombardment as Liraz prepares to to explode the site, thus destroying everything his comrades have fought and in some cases died to defend.
Based on a true story, BEAUFORT is one of the most acclaimed. and controversial films in the history of Israeli Cinema. Director Joseph Cedar confronts the difficult questions of Israel's military strategy in Lebanon but also more broadly the sacrifices of young soldiers and the futility of war.
