Description

The first feature film by controversial British documentary director Nicholas Broomfield (Chicken Ranch, Heidi Fleiss: Hollywood Madam, Kurt and Courtney), Dark Obsession is a relentless character study of overwhelming obsessions and psychological bewilderment.

Hugo Brockton (Gabriel Byrne), an ex-Guards officer, lives in the lap of luxury. With a cushy position in a prestigious London investment house and an exceptionally beautiful wife, little more could be hoped for to make his existence more idyllic. As time goes by, Hugo harbors a growing obsession that his exquisite wife (Amanda Donohoe) is having an affair with her Argentine business colleague.

Dark, foreboding visions evolve -- enhanced by the primordial abyss he often drinks himself into -- as Hugo slips deeper and deeper toward the borderline of hallucination. One night, after a particularly liquor-ridden dinner party with friends, Hugo, at the wheel of someone else's car, runs down a young woman who for a moment appears in his mind's eye to be his own wife.

What follows is a twisted series of events in which Hugo's dark obsessions collide with the careless attitudes of his Regimental drinking buddies. Strong acting, gorgeous English countryside, and frequent nudity make this an auspicious feature debut.
