Designed by Jason Hines (and performed with the assistance of Jon Ludwig), the shadow puppet sequence uses Victorian silhouette designs and authentic turn-of-the-century puppetry techniques to transform a tale of necrophilia into an expressionistic fairy tale. For one shot, Hines constructed an elaborate rotating barrel (decorated with three-dimensional sets) which allowed the viewer to follow Bertrand from a village, down a country lane, through a gate, across a wooded cemetery and alongside a specific grave—all in a single uninterrupted take.
